First Data Release of the PHANGS–MUSE Nebular Catalogue

Published: 14 May 2025

The first release of the PHANGS–MUSE Nebular Catalogue (PI: Schinnerer) is now available from the ESO Science Archive Facility. This release is based on integral-field spectroscopic observations obtained with the MUSE instrument at the VLT, primarily under the PHANGS–MUSE Large Programme, and supplemented by data from additional ESO programmes (see PHANGS-MUSE release description).

This release comprises a catalogue of 31,399 sources, identified across 19 nearby (z ~ 0) star-forming disk galaxies. Of these, 30,790 nebulae are classified as science-quality sources (excluding foreground star contamination and flagged edge effects) — primarily H II regions (~75%). Each nebula is characterized by integrated emission-line measurements (e.g. Hα, Hβ, [O III], [N II], [S II]) and derived physical properties such as attenuation, gas-phase metallicity, ionisation parameter, and galactic environment. The catalogue is based on Hα maps extracted from mosaicked MUSE datacubes, with a median spatial resolution of ~70 pc.

Per-galaxy nebular mask images are provided as ancillary data products, allowing spatial mapping of the catalogue regions. A global metadata file is also included to facilitate cross-galaxy querying.

The catalogue(s) are available also via the ESO Archive Science Portal, the Programmatic Access service, or the Catalogue Facility.

The DOI assigned to this data collection is https://doi.org/10.18727/archive/47.
