Update on Issues with GIRAFFE Medusa2 reference calibration frames after earthquake 27 Nov 2015

Published: 18 Jan 2016

The issue with the GIRAFFE Medusa2(*) calibration data reported on January 11, 2016, is fixed for most of the science data taken after 2015-11-27. All master calibrations delivered through the calSelector raw2master mode can be used for science processing.

If you prefer the raw2raw mode of calSelector (or if calSelector has not found master calibrations), you should check the files called REFERENCE_DISP_SOLUTION. For Medusa2, their name should contain the string 151215 (for 2015-12-15). If so, they can be trusted and they are applicable. If not, they are still outdated ones and are not applicable to science data taken later than 2015-11-27. They will be updated as soon as possible.

For Medusa1 data there is no issue.

(*) The FLAMES/GIRAFFE spectrograph is fed by a fibre system which hosts 2 MEDUSA fibre slits, one per positioner plate: Medusa1 and Medusa2. While one plate is observing, the other one is positioning the fibres for subsequent observations, therefore limiting the dead time between observations to less than 15 minutes.
