HST Spectrograph Class Rationale

• This is a re-classification of HST spectrographic datasets, based on the HST Archive in Europe (http://archive.eso.org/) and the WDB Web/Sybase interface tool (http://archive.eso.org/wdb/wdb.html).

Rationale

• Currently limited to HST spectral datasets.

• Class information is fused with IUE class scheme.

• To arrive at classes, we used: coordinates to match with IUE datasets; free text descriptors in dataset name, keyword list, or abstract.

Aspects to Review and to Fine-Tune

• The IUE class dictionary was extended for various objects: some re-adjustment may be required.

• Similarly new objects in the future may need to be specially catered for.

• The 2% of the datasets which escaped classification is to be looked at in more detail.

Some Figures

• GHRS: 6603 spectra were used, in mid-October 1995.

  A maximum of 10 classes were assigned to one dataset. There was an average of 3.3 classes/dataset. From the given 6603 spectra, 97.9% had at least one class assigned.

• FOS: 4847 spectra were used, in mid-October 1995.

  A maximum of 14 classes were assigned to one dataset. There was an average of 2 classes/dataset. From the given 4847 spectra, 98.3% had at least one class assigned.
